Technical Q&A: Troubleshooting & Process Engineering

What causes heat transfers to peel off after the first few washes, and how can we prevent it?
Peeling is typically caused by insufficient mechanical bonding, which happens when the adhesive doesn't fully penetrate the fabric fibers. This can be caused by low application temperature, short dwell times, or insufficient line pressure during heat pressing. Additionally, some fabrics have durable water repellent (DWR) or silicone coatings that resist standard adhesives. To resolve this, we configure custom adhesive formulations tailored to the fabric type and perform peel-strength testing to establish correct heat press parameters.
How does dye migration occur, and how does your barrier layer stop it?
Dye migration happens when disperse dyes in synthetic fabrics are heated. At temperatures around 130°C to 150°C, these dyes vaporize and migrate into the ink layers of the transfer label. We prevent this by printing a specialized barrier layer, containing active carbon or high-molecular-weight copolymer resins, between the adhesive and the ink. This layer absorbs or blocks the migrating dye molecules, protecting the design's original colors.
Why do some transfers crack when applied to high-stretch spandex or Lycra fabrics?
Cracking occurs when the elasticity of the transfer film does not match the stretch capacity of the garment fabric. When the garment stretches, the brittle ink or adhesive layer fractures under the mechanical strain. For performance wear, we use elastomeric inks and TPU films with high tensile recovery, allowing the transfer to stretch and return to its original shape without cracking.
What is the shelf life of heat transfer labels before application?
Generally, our transfers can be stored for 12 to 24 months depending on storage conditions. For optimal shelf life, store them in a cool, dry place (temperature: 15°C to 25°C, relative humidity: 40% to 60%) in their original moisture-barrier packaging. Excessive heat or humidity can prematurely activate the hot-melt adhesive or degrade the carrier film.
Is there a difference in durability between hot-peel and cold-peel carriers?
The peeling type relates to the release properties of the carrier sheet, not the durability of the transfer itself. Hot-peel carriers speed up production lines because they are removed immediately after pressing. Cold-peel carriers require the adhesive to cool completely, forming a secure mechanical bond before release. This is often preferred for intricate details or highly textured finishes. Both types offer comparable wash durability when applied using the correct application parameters.
